3.looking at contemporary interpretations (Heidegger, Derrida, Deleuze, Foucault and Lyotard) of Plato’s work

4.looking at Apperception, Intuition and the Nature of the Self in French 19th century Philosophy, from Maine de Biran and Ravaisson to Bergson;

Of these four, each comprising two units, there are three on offer every year. For further information concerning the units on offer, please write to k.crome@mmu.ac.uk

Research Positions at the University of Konstanz, Germany

The University of Konstanz is one of the nine Universities of Excellence in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The Zukunftskolleg is a central scientific institution of the University of Konstanz for the promotion of young scientists in the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. It forms a platform for interdisciplinary discourse between distinguished researchers in Germany and abroad, and provides young scientists with resources for
obtaining third-party funding.

We are offering 5 Research Positions (up to Salary Scale 14 TV-L) in the fields of

a) foundations of social justice
b) mixed feelings

Each position can, in principle, be divided into two part-time positions. The initial appointments will commence on October 1, 2009, and end on March 31, 2011. An extension of the work contract for an additional 3.5 years will be financed by the Zukunftskolleg provided that substantial external funding for a research project has been granted.

The Zukunftskolleg provides a professional infrastructure and an appropriate workplace for conducting research. A pool for funding cooperative projects, research assistants, research trips and the acquisition of equipment is available. Additionally, fellows may nominate recognized experts in their field of research as senior fellows, who will be invited to Konstanz for a period of 3-12 months and who, in addition to their research work, will advise young scientists in the Zukunftskolleg.

The prerequisites for acceptance are a doctoral degree and outstanding scientific qualification as documented by research activities and publications. The ideal candidate has acquired initial work experience as a postdoctoral researcher. International experience in teaching or research, a strong interest in interdisciplinary topics and thematic affiliation with one of the research initiatives at the University of Konstanz (see http://www.uni-konstanz.de/forschung/index.php?cont=forschungsinitiativen&lang=de are desirable. Each fellow is a member of both a department of the university and the Zukunftskolleg. Involvement in teaching is
possible.

The project outline should point out topical connections to the research profile of the University of Konstanz. The proposed project must be in one of the following research fields:

Foundations of social justice: In neoclassic economic theory, actors exclusively pursue their own individual interests, which raise questions about the foundations of altruism, collective rationality and social justice. From a philosophical and normative perspective,
the resulting problems are still unsolved. New empirical impulses are provided by research that deals with the neuro- and socio-psychological foundations of human decisions and actions.

Mixed feelings: The interdisciplinary study of emotion, feeling and affect. Science’s view of emotion, feeling and affect has always been ambivalent, although they drive human action and inspire outstanding artistic and humanitarian achievements. Emotions have an individual cerebral basis but communicatory function. The many facets of emotional communication are reflected in society and the media, both of which are products of the human brain, and act back on it to shape it.

Fellows are expected to actively participate in the regular weekly meetings of the Zukunftskolleg and to reside in Konstanz.

Fellows will be selected on the basis of their project outlines and a two-day workshop to be held on July 28-29, 2009 at the University of Konstanz.

Information about the fellowships and additional opportunities for participation in the Zukunftskolleg are available on our website:

http://www.uni-konstanz.de/zukunftskolleg.

The University of Konstanz is an equal opportunity employer and tries to increase the number of women in research and teaching.

The University of Konstanz encourages disabled persons to apply; they will be given preference if appropriately qualified (contact the disabled persons representative: Tel.: +49 (0) 7531 / 88 – 3725).

The University of Konstanz has been certified by the Hertie Foundation to be a family-friendly institution. The University is committed to further the compatibility of work and family life.

Applicants should send their application form (see www.uni-konstanz.de/zukunftskolleg), their project outline (maximum length 6 pages), a letter of motivation (one page), application documents (curriculum vitae, publication list, relevant degree certificates) and a reading excerpt (maximum length 30 pages)in
English as a PDF file to: zukunftskolleg@uni-konstanz.de.

CONF CFP: Teleology in the Ancient World: The Dispensation of Nature, July 2009, The University of Exeter, UK

TELEOLOGY IN THE ANCIENT WORLD
The Dispensation of Nature

Venue: The University of Exeter, 8-11 July, 2009
Organisers: Dr. Julius Rocca and Prof. Christopher Gill

An international conference which will discuss the ways teleological arguments were used in medicine and philosophy in antiquity, and how these arguments have continued to inform and influence current debate on evolution, creationism, and intelligent design. As well as examining philosophical contributions to the subject, especially Platonic and Aristotelian, a special aim of the conference is to show how ancient medical thinking on this topic relates to ancient philosophical ideas. Examining teleological methodologies in ancient medical thought from Hippocrates to Galen will offer a critical evaluation on the place of teleology within medical science, its cultural contexts, its account of human development, and teleological responses to competing explanatory theories of human structure and function.

Keynote speaker, Professor David Sedley, University of Cambridge: “Socrates’ place in the history of teleology.”

Other speakers: Elizabeth Craik, University of St. Andrews; John Dillon, Trinity College, Dublin; Rebecca Flemming, University of Cambridge; R. J. Hankinson, The University of Texas at Austin; M.R. Postdoctoral Fellowship in Philosophy at the University of Hertfordshire, UK

The University of Hertfordshire invites applications for a two-year Research Fellowship, to work with Professor Paul Coates and Dr Sam Coleman, as part of a three-year Arts and Humanities Research Council funded Research Project in Philosophy and Cognitive Science on ‘The Nature of Phenomenal Qualities’.

The Project focuses upon the cognitive role and ontological nature of phenomenal qualities, and in particular upon their relation to the physical world. It will examine both the “objective” and the “subjective” dimensions of phenomenal qualities as they occur in experiences.  One branch of the Project explores the role that phenomenal qualities play in perception: it will investigate whether they are best understood as intrinsic properties of inner experiences, or alternatively, should be construed as the manifest properties of perceived objects. The second branch of the Project concerns the metaphysics of phenomenal qualities and the philosophy of mind: in particular, it will involve an investigation of the prospects for integrating such qualities within a broadly physicalistic worldview (each branch will be broadly construed, and we accept that there may be some overlap between the areas of investigation). Fuller details about the AHRC funded Project are available at: <http://www.paulcoates.net/projects.php>.

The Project is a large and ambitious one, involving a worldwide network of leading researchers in philosophy of mind/perception. It will include a high-profile lecture series, seminars, and two workshops, leading up to a major international conference on phenomenal qualities in 2011/12. Successful applicants, therefore, can look forward to being part of a rich and vibrant research community, at the cutting-edge of its discipline.

We seek someone interested in the nature of phenomenal qualities to study within this general area to produce research that is congruent with the aims of the Project. The precise topic may be within either of the two areas identified above, or it may deal with an aspect of the problem which brings together both dimensions of the investigation. The successful candidate will have completed a PhD on a topic closely related to the Project’s central subject matter. They will be expected to play an active role in the research activities organised in the Project, and to contribute to the conference that is planned for the final year of the Project, and also to play a suitable role within the overall philosophy research environment at Hertfordshire.

The fellowship is for two years’ full-time study, with a salary in the range from £29,000 to £31,500 (UH7), starting in October 2009.

Applicants should apply by submitting a CV, a research proposal (max. 1500 words) and also a sample of recent work (of around 5000 words), and arranging for references from two academic referees to be sent to:  jobs@herts.ac.uk<mailto:jobs@herts.ac.uk>

The closing date for applications is Friday, 17th April, 2009, and interviews will probably take place in early May.

Interested applicants may wish to contact either Paul Coates (P.Coates@herts.ac.uk<mailto:P.Coates@herts.ac.uk>) or Sam Coleman (S.Coleman@herts.ac.uk<mailto:S.Coleman@herts.ac.uk>) for further information.
